NEWS PAGE:       STUFF WE FEEL NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED

Fawns Fawns  What a problem child they have been for NCWRC.  Its  hard to advise or manage Rehabilitation when you have no one who knows. EWC hopes in 2007  The real expert  Dana Sims, Alamance County, Will be reinstated as the supervisor.  This Picture Shows the proper cageing and atmosphere they need, not goat pens by the house. Unfourtunately our offer to help was deemed unacceptable to NCRWC because EWC refused to go along with a disaster program in 2006 so we quit! We still do fawns through one of our members but EWC does not sanction the program as an organazation.

Caught on a trail camera, one of our bucks from 2005

What is this thing? darn thought it was a bottle.

  Broken Jaw, but did fine

  Pie bald

This little guy did'nt make it

Although EWC isnt a fawn facility in 2007 we still are involved in helping out our fawn person.  Here a little one is presented after being carefully taken away from a citizen.  You know " a friend of a friend of mine has a fawn"  can you help?  Thomas Glass, a state rehabber, and his son did the transport to EWC.  A little Buck , he had just come out of his crate for the first time in a nice natural cage.  This was the last time it was touched.  He is doing well with his fawn Permitted rehabber, Marti Brinson, also a member of EWC.

Aubie, unfourtanately was euthanazied due to severe foot injuries from electric Power lines 2005.

Finally, NC has taken a pro-active stance to stop the Rabies outbreak that has led to the destruction of hundreds and hundreds of racoons, foxes, skunks. and bats.

North Crolinas way was kill them all, why is that surprising?  Now the state is finally dropping bait that contains anti rabies serum, supplied by the USDA.  After all ,other states have done this for years but as usual NC had its head stuck in the sand.  We still cannot rehabilitate them, but at least they have a fighting chance against a very preventable disease. Was it in public intrest to allow rabies to spread so fast without a plan?  Fun taking those shots?  EWC thinks a disease so preventable was allowed to become a public threat by politics and in action for years.

BALD EAGLE SHOT FEBUARY 2007

"Jefferson"  was presented to EWC by NCWRC as a injuried BE. X-Rays Revealed why.  Shot gun pellets, and a broken L Femur. An immediate investigation was started by USFWS.  While this is still an on going process, Jefferson will be released 4 7 07 after 10 weeeks at EWC. This story will be on going with the final outcome of the shooter and Jeff.

We beleive Jeff broke his femur from the dead fall after getting hit in the chest.  It was a bad fracture, but one of those lucky ones that could be repaired.  It was repaired by Sandra McKenzie our Raptor vet.  It Healed very well and in 8 weeks the cast came off.  We will be asking the courts for compensation for care from the shooter,  Although we give free care to anyone, we dont for criminals. we understand there is a defendant in the case.

Our Friend Jack Baker Law enforcment USFWS.  Like Jack said everytime I call him it "aint good"  EWC and USFWS have been through this shooting of Raptors, several times, and we appreciate their efforts to convict the responsible party.  Here Jack is checking Jeff 1 day after the removal of the cast. Jeff had been confined to  this small area for 8 weeks to keep him from flying and using his leg to land. If you notice his tail is still molted with black and a spot on his head so we would  put his age at between 4 and 5 years of age.

Ahh finally some space. In the very back of the flight cage is where they go to hide.  This corner is where the herons hide but we have found almost any bird we fly likes to get out of sight.  Jeff has just flown 5 laps and is pacing the back wall,  Andrew Jackson on the right is on a  adoption list and has limited flight.  This is a huge cage, with a pond in the center, telephoto lenses shrink it.  Again notice the black molt of jeff on the left and the bright white of AJ on the right.  AJ is 5 years plus in age.

As Nimette Soli checks on AJ, Jefferson heads to the other end of the cage

HURRY UP!   Jefferson came from BATH, NC.   It will be fitting that  in the oldest Town in NC, Home of the oldest church, Blackbeard, and  Surveyour John Lawson, Jeff will join the stripers  running up Bath Creek,  and soon my freind you will catch your own!

Just as promised, Jefferson seemed to imediately know where she was, as she climbed like a F-16, soaring towards Bath creek 1/2 mile away.  Enjoy the ride its been a good one for EWC!

Its funny a lot of people thought Jeff, in the picutre was dead!  Ita a normal position, of a bird that has given up.  After knowing she cannot move in my hold, they just relax!!!  That was the best release I have ever seen of a BE as far as strength to climb and distance flying. and Ive seen a few from different organazations.
